This book club was different from the previous one This book club was different from the previous ones – there was not a lot of laughter as usual, and no game, because it just didn’t feel appropriate with a topic as heavy as the one in ‘The Tattooist of Auschwitz’. But like David said, the book club wasn’t fun, but things don’t always have to be fun – and he’s absolutely right. It’s important to have serious conversations about topics like the holocaust, the wars, history, and politics, because all of that allows us to grow into better human beings. We certainly enjoyed talking about all of this, and we highly recommend reading the sad and yet impactful story based on real events.
[To lighten the mood, do swipe to see a picture of David’s pet!]
Its been a hot second, but if you wished you’d w Its been a hot second, but if you wished you’d watched Carol last Christmas but missed it: this is your chance! Filled with dramatic, smouldering stares, conveniently forgotten gloves and a whole bunch of Cate Blanchett hair flips, this is an unforgettable film to warm your January. Link will be provided here, on Facebook and on our website.

This year has certainly been a memorable one, and This year has certainly been a memorable one, and that’s why the 2020-2021 yearbook will be one to remember! To not let this year and the unique experience slip by undocumented we need to put together a committee of creative minds, writers, and editors, who find a way to capture this extraordinary, this strange and confusing study year with all its ups and downs, challenges, and experiences. In previous years this was done via interviews, photographs, articles, and questionnaires, but of course, it will not be limited to these formats.

Jobs & Positions

Unlike other committees, the Yearbook committee only has two specific positions.

Chair: As chair, you are responsible for leading the meetings and making sure everyone stays on top of their work. When someone cannot do their tasks, it is your job to make sure they are still getting done.
Secretary: The secretary takes the minutes during the meeting so that the committee members can come back to them to see what has been discussed.

The other members do not have specific tasks but instead, we are looking for members with different skills and interests. Taking on one of the mentioned positions does not exclude you from contributing to the yearbook in any way!

We are looking for writers, interviewers, photographers, editors, and anyone who thinks they can contribute to the yearbook in any form.
Since this year is very different we are especially interested in your ideas on how to approach this.

P.S. Dear first years, we know you have not had your fair chance of getting to know uni life as it would usually be, but we would love to have you on the committee, with your unique perspective on this year. Please do not hesitate to sign up! It will be fine, I promise.

LLACE was delighted to see so many familiar faces LLACE was delighted to see so many familiar faces at the book club and to forget the current cold and stressful times to discuss The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (and the other books in the series). From discussing themes such as characters, symbolisms, adventure, to derailing and talking about other literary works and authors, the event was a relaxed ambience and provided a nice opportunity for talking with fellow students despite the current circumstances. A huge thanks for everyone to have participated, and to Františka Beránková for the beautiful watercolour artwork! We were all happy to see you on Zoom, and congratulations to Anne Benkowitz, Etcetera’s Commissary of External Affairs, for winning the bingo-game!
In cooperation with Dr. Viktorija Kostadinova Etce In cooperation with Dr. Viktorija Kostadinova Etcetera organised a linguistic-inspired movie night to watch “The Social Dilemma”. The documentary discusses social media, and how it influences our life, but most importantly, how companies control and profit from social media users. Following the Teleparty, we discussed these issues, our opinions, and our own experiences. Thanks to Viktorija for guiding the discussion and everyone who attended for sharing your opinions and the semi-successful high-fives.

Feel free to dress up in your house colours to make it even more exciting! The questions we’ll ask will be from different categories, among which are multiple-choice, fill in the blank, who said this?, and many more. Do keep in mind that, in order to attend, you need to be a member of Etcetera – if you aren’t yet, you can still sign up! LLACE was beyond excited to be celebrating Nationa LLACE was beyond excited to be celebrating National Novel Writing Month with a workshop led by Dr. Rose van der Zwaard, who provided great insight into what creative writing entails. Along with her powerpoint slides, she encouraged everyone for some writing inspired by creative prompts, as well as a definition and explanation of what creative writing actually is. Attendees were also given insight into creative writing courses available at the Universiteit van Amsterdam before they learned about the seven basic plots used in writing. After this theoretical approach, attendees were once again encouraged to write some short texts themselves, and Dr. van der Zwaard sparked everyone’s imagination with some more prompts along with a “Showing vs. Telling” exercise. Overall, the workshop was very enjoyable for everyone, and Dr. Rose van der Zwaard created an inspiring and motivating atmosphere where people felt comfortable to share their own writing inspired by the prompts. A huge thank you to Dr. van der Zwaard for collaborating with LLACE for this event – it was a pleasure!
