LLACE was beyond excited to be celebrating Nationa

LLACE was beyond excited to be celebrating National Novel Writing Month with a workshop led by Dr. Rose van der Zwaard, who provided great insight into what creative writing entails. Along with her powerpoint slides, she encouraged everyone for some writing inspired by creative prompts, as well as a definition and explanation of what creative writing actually is. Attendees were also given insight into creative writing courses available at the Universiteit van Amsterdam before they learned about the seven basic plots used in writing. After this theoretical approach, attendees were once again encouraged to write some short texts themselves, and Dr. van der Zwaard sparked everyone’s imagination with some more prompts along with a “Showing vs. Telling” exercise. Overall, the workshop was very enjoyable for everyone, and Dr. Rose van der Zwaard created an inspiring and motivating atmosphere where people felt comfortable to share their own writing inspired by the prompts. A huge thank you to Dr. van der Zwaard for collaborating with LLACE for this event – it was a pleasure!

Like last time, we want to encourage you to submit any kind of artwork that you are inspired to create while reading, and we look forward to receiving (and posting) it. Following the talk with award-winning crime writer Denise Mina, LLACE is hosting a creative writing workshop to honour National Novel Writing Month of November! Dr. Rose van der Zwaard will be leading the workshop and present a Powerpoint with both tips/tricks and theory on creative writing, as well as providing you with some on-the-spot writing exercises. This workshop will give you a chance of gaining awareness of the scope of creative writing and give you an insight into plotting and using language efficiently. The event will take place on Zoom, and we will post the link to the event in our discussion posts on Facebook and on the Etcetera website!

With the Alumnikring Engels and LLACE, award-winning crime author Denise Mina gave attendees an insight into what it is like to be an author, what crime writing entails, how to start a novel, the importance of talking about income in the arts, and what the challenges of writing crime are without glorifying the criminals and their acts. Mina reminded everyone that if you can tell someone a story, you can write a story – you just have to focus on writing one sentence after the other, while it is also important not to compare your first draft to the finished edited script of an already published novel. After talking freely about her work, Mina answered questions that you raised, and it was certainly a pleasure to hear all of the interesting responses that she gave. The days are getting shorter, darker, and colder – Winter is approaching fast, which is why LLACE decided to suggest four books that are all in the theme of winter and/or Christmas. We are also very happy to include two books in the poll that have been suggested by two of our last book club-attendees, as they have won the game of bingo that we had prepared. Despite hosting the book club the week after exams

Despite hosting the book club the week after exams, LLACE was thrilled to see familiar faces and discuss this awesome book. We thoroughly enjoyed exchanging ideas on themes (such as family, magic, childhood, tents) and to hear your insights on all of them. In addition, the bingo-game that we played was a lot of fun (and giving our bingo-winners @xemmalassche and @anne.ben the chance of picking out a book for the poll for the next book club!) and we would like to thank you for attending and for submitting your art and cosy pictures – we admire all the effort that you put into them! We hope you had as much fun as we did, and if you couldn’t attend this event, stay tuned for more in the future!

LLACE would like to remind you of the upcoming book club where we will discuss ‘The Night Circus’ by Erin Morgenstern! We have some updates for you:

1. We would like to give an opportunity to all aspiring artists among you to send in any piece of creative art that you might have made (or will make after seeing this announcement) which we will then post on the Instagram-feed.
2. The Zoom link is now up on Facebook, so go look in our event discussions to find it.
3. LLACE would also encourage everyone to dress up in the colours of the Night Circus (red, white, and black) to create some aesthetics on Zoom!
4. Lastly, LLACE will include a game of bingo in the book club, which we will explain further on Thursday!
