First Impressions!
School has begun again and so has all the homework. the sleepless nights, the long rows for much-needed caffeine boosts, and deadline stress.
With all of that looming over us we would like to look back at the simpler, and warmer, days of summer. Every year, the school year gets kicked off with the Intreeweek, a week where the first-years get one last chance to misbehave before they will be chained to the school benches. We asked two brand new first-year students who participated in the introduction week to share some of their experiences!

Change can be both refreshing and overwhelming, therefore an introduction may always be in place. For students starting to study at the UvA there is the intreeweek, in which this year I took part in as well. Five days full of all sorts of activities: cycling through Amsterdam, adjusting to its traffic and house rules; spending the morning in Artis, still sleepy from the night before and finishing off at the Melkweg until the first signs of sunshine. But most importantly, making new friends, meeting new people and starting to feel at home. I cannot wait for all of the changes that await me in the future, if they are introduced in the same way I will welcome them happily. – Dorus (19)
Ah yes, de intreeweek. Een kleine inleiding op wat het studentenleven kan zijn, van cultureel en serieus, zoals een bezoek aan het concertgebouw met daarbij een prachtige opvoering van het Sweelinckorkest tot gewoon hard gaan en feesten, zoals bij de kroegentocht en het eindfeest het geval was. Teambuilding en vriendschap waren de twee thema’s van deze geweldige week.
Met “Intreemoms” Hymke en Elise hebben wij (bijna) alle activiteiten getackeld, en daarbij veel gelachen. Bij het spel ‘De Jordanees’ was het zaak op elkaars kennis te vertrouwen en zo ‘de Jordanees’ tussen een aantal sterren vandaan te pikken, met zo nu en dan een leuke opdracht tussendoor. Een andere highlight was de kroegentocht, waar naast vooral fun ook teambuilding weer een grote factor was. Bij de ‘pubquiz’ moesten verschillende vragen over Amsterdam beantwoord worden, met een beloning voor de winnaar waar elk team voor warmliep 😉. De rivaliteit was dan ook groot, maar van vriendschappelijke aard. Maar van al deze dagen was de vrijdag voor mij het leukste, met het festival in park Frankendael en het eindfeest waarop iedereen lekker los kon gaan op ‘Terug Naar Toen’ in de Melkweg.
Toch gaat het er bij deze week bovenal om dat je niet alleen lol hebt met jezelf, maar vooral met elkaar. Dit zijn tenslotte de mensen waarmee je je hele studie gaat doorbrengen; and chances are, they’re just like you! – Emma (18)
